Ireland is developing rapidly as an entrepreneurial economy. More and more Irish people are now setting-up and managing their own businesses to the extent that these small and medium sized enterprises (SME’s) are the engine of the Irish economy. Becoming an entrepreneur has, quite rightly become, a legitimate role model. Entrepreneurs are considered to be the modern patriots and the wealth creators for the country. The Government has set innovation, entrepreneurship and R&D as key priorities for investment. But, it’s not just Ireland. Innovation and Entrepreneurship have been installed as central pillars of economic development by the EU and the US and, hence, there has rarely been a better time to prepare for a career as an entrepreneur.
As a student of Entrepreneurship, you will gain the expertise to develop and manage innovation in both start-up businesses and in established companies. You will also acquire key business skills in areas such as design and creativity, marketing, HR, finance, product development, intellectual property, business planning and venture capital fundraising. You will learn to think analytically and to communicate clearly and effectively. These are skills that are immensely valuable in business both in Ireland and abroad.
While this course incorporates an emphasis on setting up and scaling new businesses; the skills can be equally effectively deployed in large, multinational, commercial or public service organisations. The curriculum has been designed with input from businesses and the state enterprise development agencies.

Exciting career opportunities exist for Entrepreneurship graduates in a wide variety of innovation, project management and marketing positions in technology, service and other industries. This degree is also suitable for ‘social entrepreneurs' who wish to initiate and develop public and community ventures that benefit society, whether profit or not-for-profit.
In common with other Business graduates of NUI Maynooth, this programme incorporates a year-long internship or work-placement which is organised by the university for students who (are eligible and who) want to enhance their academic skills by adding valuable work experience during their undergraduate degree. The work-placement is an optional year, which can be taken in third year. This year, we have students working home and abroad; placed with large organisations like O2, United Drug, Failte Ireland, Bord Bia and with smaller, local businesses.
Graduates of this programme are equipped for a wide variety of career options. Successful students emerge with an ability to think analytically, to be conversant with strategy and innovation and to communicate succinctly and effectively. These skills mean that graduates will be uniquely equipped to seek employment in management across a wide variety of sectors including the public sector or Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Food Industry, Information Technology, Telecommunications, and Engineering.
While not limited to those who envisage a career in developing and managing innovation either in a start-up situation (entrepreneurship) or in an existing company (intrapreneurship), those with this as an ambition will find the focus on the development of an enterprise culture in the degree a very good foundation on which to build their career. And, for those who want to further their studies afterwards, this degree is perfectly aligned with two Masters in Business programmes being offered by the university.
